The Challenge
Northwind dispatches more than 1,400 technicians across four countries. Coordinators were assigning jobs from shared spreadsheets and phone calls, so the office never had a reliable view of who was where. Assigning an urgent job took an average of 18 minutes, and double-bookings cost them SLA penalties every month.
An earlier attempt at a single-page app stalled: it took nine seconds to load on technicians’ mid-range Android phones and was unusable on patchy rural connections.
The Solution
We built a server-first web application that treats the network as unreliable and the edge as the primary runtime.
- Edge-rendered views. Job boards, technician schedules, and job detail pages render in Cloudflare Workers, so the first screen is useful HTML in under 100ms instead of a loading spinner.
- Edge data layer. Job state lives in a strongly consistent coordination layer at the edge, which removes double-booking races without a central database round trip on every assignment.
- Live updates without a heavy client. A WebSocket island streams assignment changes to the coordinator board; every other screen works as plain HTML forms with progressive enhancement.
- Offline-tolerant field view. Technicians can open, update, and close jobs on a weak signal; writes queue locally and reconcile when the connection returns.
Key Outcomes
- Edge TTFB: under 100ms median across all four operating regions
- Dispatch Speed: average urgent assignment time cut from 18 minutes to under 7
- Reliability: 99.98% uptime over the first 12 months, with no double-booking incidents
- Field Adoption: 94% of technicians active weekly within six weeks of rollout
